Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
John 6:35
The Extraordinary Minister’s function is to distribute Holy Communion, either within Mass or by taking it to a sick person, when an ordained minister (bishop, priest or deacon) is absent or impeded. … The only minister of the Eucharist is the priest – which is why lay ministers are called Extraordinary Ministers.
In the Diocese of Knoxville, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned by the Bishop for a 3-year term, or ministry assignment.
